Camino de Santiago 2016

Every single one of us possesses the strength to attempt something he isn't sure he can accomplish. It can be running a mile, or a 10 k race, or 100 miles. It can be changing a career, losing 5 lbs., or telling someone you love her (or him).
-- Scott Jurek

Old age is the time to be dangerous. Dangerously fun loving, dangerously alive . . . This is the time to do every single thing we can possibly do with all the life we can bring to it. This is the time to live with an edge, with strength, with abandon. There is nothing for which to save our energy. Now it is simply time to spend time well.

Day 26 Villafranca del Bierzo to Las Herrerias.

I left Villafranca del Bierzo at dawn.

One last look back as I headed up the valley along the Rio Valcarce.

This is not enhanced. The heather on the mountain made it glow purple.

The villages along the Camino in this area are little more than ghost towns with many abandoned and crumbling rock and slate buildings. Once in a while though, a home like this appears.

My destination, Las Herrerias is in a lush green valley
This is the view from the terrace of my hotel located just before Las Herrerias. I could see a church on a hill above the village so set off to explore.

The church is not mentioned in any of the guidebooks and appeared to be abandoned.
